Electronics Research Projects

The electronics industry is a historically important manufacturing sector in Massachusetts. Faced with restrictions on certain substances by customers and governments, companies in MA have benefited from collaborating with the R&D capabilities of TURI and its academic partners. Recent examples of research conducted to benefit the electronics industry include:

Gold-Tin Nanosolder Nanowires

2009 -- Green Chemistry Synthesis of Nanostructured Poly(2,5-dimethoxyaniline) - Prof. Sanjeev Manohar, UMass Lowell, Department of Chemical Engineering. Industry Partners: Benchmark Electronics, EMC, Inc.

2008-2009 -- Nanoscale Lead-Free Solders ("Nano-Solders"): Synthesis, Characterization, and Reflow Properties - Prof. Zhiyong Gu, UMass Lowell, Department of Chemical Engineering.

2002 -- Performance Analysis of Lead-Free Printed Wiring Boards - Prof. Sammy Shina, UMass Lowell, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Industry Partners: BTU International, Raytheon, Texas Instruments, M/A-COM, Schneider Automation, and Sanmina.

2001 -- The Use of Enzymatic and Aqueous Electrochemical Polymerization of Phenol and Amphyphilic Alkyl Tyrosine Derivatives a Environmentally Benign Coatings in the Microelectronics Industry to Eliminate Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Epoxy Resins - Prof. Kenneth Marx and Prof. Anastasios Angelopoulos, UMass Lowell, Chemistry Department.

2000 -- Developing and Analyzing Lead-Free Soldering Processes for Printed Wiring Boards - Prof. Sammy Shina, UMass Lowell, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
